Tuckpointing and repointing remove deteriorated mortar from affected joints and replace it with new mortar to restore the masonry.

Why Proper Joint Preparation Matters

New mortar performs best when it is installed into properly prepared joints. Smearing a thin layer of mortar over the face of a failing joint may look better temporarily, but it does not provide the same repair as removing deteriorated material and rebuilding the joint.

Repointing is not simply spreading fresh mortar over the face of an old joint. Loose and deteriorated mortar has to be removed to a useful depth so replacement mortar can bond to sound material. Shallow cosmetic smears can separate because they depend on weak material underneath.
