Gas Fireplace Repair

Gas fireplaces combine burners, valves, pilots or electronic ignition systems, controls and decorative components. When one part fails, the fireplace may stop lighting, shut down unexpectedly or operate differently than normal.

A Gas Valve and Burner Repair in the St. Louis Area

The photos below are from one gas fireplace repair. The unit was not running the way it should, and the firebox had years of mineral staining across the panels with a log set that was well past its life.

We took the fireplace down to its components — log set out, burner assembly out, access panel off — so the system could actually be diagnosed rather than guessed at. The gas valve assembly was the problem, so it was replaced along with the shutoff and a new flexible connector. With the gas side sorted, the firebox was cleaned and refinished before everything went back together.

The last photo is the unit lit and tested at the end of the visit: a clean, even blue flame across the full burner, which is what a correctly running gas fireplace should look like.

Diagnosing the Problem

Repair begins with the symptom. The technician reviews what the fireplace is doing, checks accessible components and narrows the problem to the system involved before recommending parts.

Pilot Systems

Pilot Assemblies

Standing-pilot and millivolt fireplaces depend on a properly operating pilot assembly. Thermocouples, thermopiles and pilot components can wear or become unreliable over time.

Thermocouples and Thermopiles

On many standing-pilot systems, a thermocouple helps prove the pilot flame and a thermopile can generate electrical energy used by the control circuit. Weak output, contamination, poor flame contact, or a failed component can contribute to ignition problems.

Ignition & Controls

Electronic Ignition Systems

Newer fireplaces may use ignition modules, sensors, wiring harnesses, batteries, remotes and electronic valves. Diagnosis can involve checking power, controls and component condition.

Remote and Wall-Control Problems

A fireplace that works manually but not from the remote may have a receiver, battery, pairing, switch, wiring, or control issue. Troubleshooting should isolate the failed part rather than replacing multiple components unnecessarily.

Valves & Burners

Gas Valves and Controls

A defective valve or control should be replaced only with an appropriate compatible component. Manufacturer and model information can be important when sourcing parts.

Burner and Flame Problems

Dirty burner ports, shifted media, incorrect log placement or component problems can affect flame appearance. The visible burner area and configuration are checked before repair is recommended.

Replacement Parts

Parts Availability

Some older fireplaces use discontinued components. If no compatible replacement is available, replacement of the larger fireplace system may be more practical than installing an unsuitable part.

Replacement Parts Must Match the System

Gas valves, pilot assemblies, modules, burners, and controls are not universal. Model information and part compatibility matter. When the correct component is unavailable, the homeowner may need to consider a larger system replacement instead of adapting an unsuitable part.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether this service is right for my fireplace?

The technician evaluates the system, symptoms and condition and explains whether maintenance, repair or replacement is appropriate.

Do you work on older gas fireplaces?

Many older systems can be serviced, but repair options depend on the manufacturer, model and availability of compatible parts.

What information helps before the appointment?

If available, the fireplace manufacturer and model number, photos and a description of the problem can help identify the system.

Conclusion

Repair the Component That Is Actually Failing

Gas fireplace troubleshooting should narrow the problem before parts are replaced. Pilot assemblies, thermocouples, thermopiles, ignition modules, receivers, valves, wiring, burners, and controls can produce similar symptoms for different reasons. AirPlease Missouri Chimney Services evaluates the system and recommends repair based on the fireplace configuration and availability of compatible components.
