Chimney Inspections
What is a Level I Chimney Inspection?
A Level I Chimney Inspection is our standard $69 visual evaluation of readily accessible chimney and fireplace components. The technician evaluates visible and accessible areas of the system, documents conditions found, explains the findings and provides recommendations when maintenance or repair is needed. A Level I inspection is not a comprehensive internal camera/video scan of the entire flue.
What does a Level I inspection typically include?
Depending on accessibility and the type of chimney, the technician may evaluate the firebox, damper, smoke chamber area, visible flue components, accessible exterior masonry, crown, cap, flashing area and other readily accessible chimney components. The exact inspection depends on the construction and accessibility of the system.
What is a Level II Chimney Inspection?
A Level II Chimney Inspection is our more detailed $149 chimney evaluation. It includes an internal camera/video scan of accessible flue or liner surfaces where applicable, additional documentation and a more detailed evaluation than a Level I inspection.
When should I consider a Level II inspection?
A Level II inspection may be appropriate when a more detailed evaluation of the flue is needed, when damage is suspected, after a chimney fire or significant event, when the condition or history of the chimney is unknown, or when a technician identifies a reason to inspect areas that cannot be adequately evaluated during a Level I inspection. A Level II inspection is not automatically required for every home sale or property transfer.
What is the difference between Level I and Level II?
Level I is a standard visual evaluation of readily accessible components. Level II goes further by using an internal camera/video scan of accessible flue or liner surfaces where applicable and includes more detailed documentation. Customers should not expect a Level I inspection to provide the same internal flue evaluation as a Level II inspection.
Do I receive photos or a written report?
Findings are documented and explained to the customer. Photos may be taken when appropriate, and written documentation or an inspection report may be provided depending on the service scheduled and the conditions found. Level II inspections include additional documentation associated with the more detailed evaluation.
Do you perform inspections for home buyers and sellers?
Yes. We can inspect chimney and fireplace systems during a real-estate transaction. The appropriate inspection level depends on the system and the reason for the evaluation. We do not automatically describe every real-estate inspection as Level II.
Gas Fireplace Inspection & Service
Is Gas Fireplace Inspection separate from a chimney inspection?
Yes. Gas Fireplace Inspection is a separate $69 diagnostic and evaluative service. It is not included in the Level I Chimney Inspection and should not be confused with Gas Fireplace Cleaning & Maintenance or Gas Fireplace Repair.
What is the difference between gas fireplace inspection, maintenance and repair?
Inspection focuses on evaluating the system and identifying visible or operational concerns. Cleaning & Maintenance focuses on routine service, cleaning and system care. Repair is performed when a specific malfunction, failed component or other condition requires corrective work. An inspection does not automatically include a full maintenance service or repair.
What can be checked during a gas fireplace inspection?
Depending on the system and accessibility, the technician may evaluate operation, burner condition, pilot or ignition components, gas valve, wiring, remote or receiver components, log or media placement, visible venting and other accessible components. The exact evaluation depends on the manufacturer, model and fireplace type.
My gas fireplace will not turn on. Can you diagnose it?
Yes. Common causes can involve the pilot assembly, thermocouple, thermopile, ignition module, gas valve, wiring, switches, batteries, remote receiver or other components. The system must be diagnosed before the correct repair or replacement part can be determined.
Do you work on manual, millivolt and electronic ignition systems?
Yes. We work with many manual, millivolt, remote-controlled and electronic ignition systems, including IPI systems. Service and parts availability depend on the manufacturer, model, age and condition of the unit.
Can you upgrade an older gas fireplace?
In many situations, yes. Depending on the fireplace, gas supply, venting and dimensions, options may include newer burner systems, log sets, remote control operation, variable flame control, electronic ignition or complete replacement and installation.
Can you convert a wood-burning fireplace to gas?
In many cases, yes. Available options depend on the existing fireplace and chimney configuration. The fireplace should be evaluated first so the appropriate vented, vent-free where permitted and appropriate, or other gas system can be recommended.
What should I do if I smell raw gas?
Do not continue operating the fireplace. Shut the system off if it can be done safely, leave the area if the odor is strong, and contact the gas utility or an appropriate qualified professional. Do not rely on a routine fireplace appointment for an active gas emergency.
Chimney Sweeping & Creosote
How do I know if my chimney needs to be swept?
A chimney may need cleaning when soot, creosote, debris or other material has accumulated. Warning signs can include visible buildup, smoky odors, poor drafting, smoke entering the room, falling debris, heavy fireplace use or an unknown maintenance history. The chimney should be evaluated to determine the appropriate cleaning method.
How much does chimney sweeping cost?
Standard chimney sweeping starts at $199 when routine cleaning is appropriate and the system is reasonably accessible. Heavy buildup, glazed creosote, blockages, nesting material or other difficult conditions can require a more advanced cleaning process and additional cost. See full pricing.
What is the difference between regular sweeping and advanced creosote removal?
Routine sweeping removes typical soot and loose deposits. More severe Stage II or Stage III type buildup can be hardened, glazed or bonded to the flue and may require specialized rotary equipment, chemical treatment, additional labor or multiple procedures. The technician will explain what is recommended based on the condition found.
Will chimney sweeping make a mess in my home?
We use professional equipment and containment procedures designed to control soot, dust and debris in the work area. Access conditions vary, but protecting the surrounding area is part of the service process.
Fireplace, Firebox & Venting Repairs
Do you repair cracked fireboxes?
Yes. Depending on the construction and condition, repairs may include refractory repair, mortar or tuckpointing work, crack repair, component replacement and other restoration methods. When appropriate, a high-temperature ceramic coating may be applied after necessary preparation and repairs.
Do you repair smoke chambers?
Yes. We evaluate and repair smoke chamber deterioration where appropriate. The recommended repair depends on the existing construction, accessibility and condition.
Do you repair prefab or factory-built fireplaces?
Yes. We inspect and service many factory-built fireplace systems. These systems are manufacturer-specific, so repair options depend on the make, model, age, condition and availability of approved or compatible components.
Can you replace refractory panels?
Yes, when an appropriate replacement or repair option is available. Original panels may not always be available for older units, so the technician must identify the fireplace and evaluate the existing condition before recommending a solution.
Do you repair or replace dampers?
Yes. Depending on the chimney and fireplace, options may include repair, replacement or installation of another appropriate damper solution, including certain top-sealing damper systems.
Do you install chimney liners?
Yes. We install chimney relining systems, including stainless-steel liner solutions where appropriate. The correct liner size, insulation requirements and connection method depend on the appliance, flue, chimney dimensions and intended use.
Do you work on water-heater flue liners?
Yes. We evaluate and install water-heater flue liner solutions where appropriate. Appliance venting must be properly sized and configured for the connected equipment.
Do you work on wood stoves and Class A chimney systems?
Yes. We service selected wood stove and Class A chimney applications. The existing appliance, chimney type, clearances, connections and installation conditions must be evaluated before work is recommended.
Masonry, Crowns & Chimney Restoration
What masonry work do you perform?
Our chimney masonry services include chimney repair, tuckpointing and repointing, brick replacement, crown repair and replacement, partial and full chimney rebuilding, chimney restoration, waterproofing and other chimney-related masonry work.
What is tuckpointing or repointing?
The process involves removing deteriorated mortar from masonry joints and installing new mortar in the properly prepared joints. It is intended to restore deteriorated joints and improve the integrity and weather resistance of the masonry. Simply smearing new mortar over failed joints is not the same as properly preparing and repointing them.
Why are my chimney bricks turning white?
White mineral deposits are commonly associated with moisture moving through masonry and leaving salts behind, often called efflorescence. It can be a sign that brick or mortar is absorbing and retaining moisture and should be evaluated together with the crown, mortar joints, flashing and other possible water-entry areas.
What is a chimney crown?
The crown is the masonry or concrete surface at the top of a masonry chimney around the flue. A properly constructed crown helps shed water away from the chimney. Cracks, deterioration, poor slope or separation can allow water to enter the masonry below.
Can you rebuild an entire chimney?
Yes. When deterioration is too extensive for localized repair, we can perform partial or full chimney rebuilding depending on the condition. Work may include removal of deteriorated masonry, new brick and mortar, crown construction, flue-related work and appropriate caps or multi-flue protection.
Do you replace individual damaged bricks?
Yes. Damaged, loose, cracked or spalled bricks can often be replaced as part of a larger tuckpointing or masonry restoration scope when the surrounding structure is suitable for repair.

Caps, Cages, Chase Covers & Water Protection
Do you install chimney caps and multi-flue cages?
Yes. We install single-flue caps, crown-mounted multi-flue cages, outside-mounted systems, damper caps and custom solutions depending on the chimney dimensions and flue configuration.
Do you install stainless-steel chase covers?
Yes. We install custom stainless-steel chase covers for many factory-built chimney chases. Custom fabrication commonly requires lead time after measurements and approval.
Do you waterproof chimneys?
Yes. Chimney waterproofing may be recommended after necessary masonry repairs are completed and the masonry is suitable for treatment. Waterproofing is not a substitute for repairing failed mortar, damaged brick, a deteriorated crown or other defects.
Why is water leaking around my chimney?
Possible sources include deteriorated crowns, failed mortar joints, porous or damaged brick, flashing or counter-flashing issues, missing or damaged caps, roof-related problems, siding or exterior-envelope issues, condensation or other concealed entry points. Water can travel before it becomes visible inside the home, so an interior stain does not always identify the exact entry point.
Can you guarantee a partial chimney repair will stop a leak?
No. If only part of the visible deterioration is repaired while other potential water-entry areas remain outside the approved scope, AirPlease Missouri Chimney Services cannot guarantee that the leak will stop. Completing the full recommended scope provides the best opportunity to address chimney-related water intrusion. Water may also originate from roofing or other building components outside the contracted chimney work.
Do you perform roofing work?
AirPlease Missouri Chimney Services focuses on chimney, fireplace and masonry work. Certain flashing or counter-flashing work directly associated with masonry chimneys may be included when appropriate, but roofing systems, flat roofs and TPO work may require a licensed roofing contractor.
Pricing, Estimates & Approvals
How much is a Level I Chimney Inspection?
The Level I Chimney Inspection is $69.
How much is a Level II Chimney Inspection?
The Level II Chimney Inspection is $149.
How much is a Gas Fireplace Inspection?
The Gas Fireplace Inspection is $69 and is separate from the Level I and Level II chimney inspection services.
Is the inspection fee applied toward the job?
Yes. The applicable inspection fee is waived or credited when the customer proceeds with qualifying completed work. The exact application of the credit will be reflected in the approved work order or estimate.
Why do you charge for inspections instead of offering a free estimate?
Many chimney and fireplace problems cannot be accurately diagnosed from the ground, from a photograph or from a short phone conversation. A paid inspection covers the technician's time to travel to the property, evaluate the appropriate accessible components, document conditions and provide recommendations based on what is actually found.
Can you give me an exact repair price over the phone?
For certain standard services we can provide starting prices or general information. Most chimney, fireplace and masonry repairs require an on-site evaluation before an accurate scope and price can be provided because accessibility, hidden conditions, dimensions and the extent of deterioration can vary significantly.
Will additional work be performed without my approval?
No. If additional work is recommended beyond the scheduled service or approved scope, it should be explained and authorized before proceeding.
Do larger projects require a deposit?
Yes. Larger repairs, masonry projects, custom-fabricated components, special-order materials and major installations generally require a 50% deposit before materials are ordered or the project is placed on the installation schedule. The estimate will state the required deposit and payment terms.
Warranties
Do you offer warranties?
Yes. Warranty coverage depends on the work performed and the materials installed. The specific warranty for each project will be stated on the estimate or invoice.
What warranty applies to masonry work?
Qualifying masonry workmanship is generally covered by a 5-year workmanship warranty unless the estimate states otherwise. Coverage applies to the contracted repaired scope and does not cover acts of nature, storm or hail damage, wind, structural movement, settlement, hidden defects or areas outside the repaired scope.
What warranty applies to stainless-steel components?
Qualifying stainless-steel components may carry up to a 10-year warranty depending on the product and scope. Manufacturer terms and conditions may apply.
What warranty applies to stainless-steel chimney liners?
Qualifying stainless-steel liner systems may carry a lifetime manufacturer warranty. Eligibility, maintenance requirements and other terms depend on the liner system installed and the manufacturer's warranty conditions.
Scheduling & Appointments
How do I schedule an appointment?
Call AirPlease Missouri Chimney Services at 314-334-1554 or submit a request through the website. Our office will collect basic information about the chimney, fireplace or gas fireplace and schedule the appropriate service.
What are your business hours?
Our regular business hours are Sunday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Do you offer same-day appointments?
Same-day appointments may be available depending on technician availability, location and the type of service required. Contact the office for current availability.
How quickly can repairs be scheduled?
Timing depends on the work. Many masonry projects are typically scheduled within approximately 7-14 business days after approval, subject to weather and workload. Custom stainless-steel products and special-order fireplace components may require additional fabrication or supplier lead time. Larger restoration projects may require more scheduling time.
Does weather affect masonry scheduling?
Yes. Exterior masonry work depends on suitable weather and site conditions. Rain, freezing temperatures, extreme heat or unsafe roof conditions can require rescheduling.
What should I do before the technician arrives?
Provide reasonable access to the fireplace, appliance and other areas that may need to be inspected. If possible, move decorations, fireplace tools, furniture and personal items away from the immediate work area. Roof or utility access may also be needed depending on the service.
Do I need to be home?
An adult or authorized representative should generally be available when interior access is required. This also allows the technician to discuss findings, answer questions and review recommended work.
